Status: PRN

Job Summary

Responds to an emergency call, assesses the situation, obtains a basic medical history and physical examination of the patient, and provides emergency care at the scene and during transit to the hospital. Utilizes necessary medical equipment to treat the patient and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness. Communicates with the medical care facility receiving the patient about the patient's condition, status, and arrival time.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He/she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Ensures through competency and training the successful performance.

  • Patient Assessment
  • Spinal immobilization equipment
  • Airway management equipment
  • Trauma management
  • Medical emergency management
  • Patient care reports as well as other necessary run reporting requirements
  • Scene safety
  • Additional resource request
  • Participates as directed and within training limits and if applicable in special operations scenes and training.

2. Ensures proper vehicle readiness and utilization.

  • Maintains current Kentucky Motor Vehicle License
  • Completes and maintains certification in the Kentucky Board of EMS approved EVOC/Defensive driving course.
  • Maintains knowledge and familiarity with each vehicle in fleet in order to operate smoothly and safely.
  • Assures ambulance is clean, stocked and response ready at the beginning and end every shift, as well as prior to each and every request for service.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred
  • Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification by the Kentucky Board of EMS required
  • Valid Kentucky Motor Vehicle Operator's License required
  • Valid Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) through the American Heart Association required
  • Other certifications and specialty training as required by the Kentucky Board of EMS
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written) strongly preferred
