Baptist Health is looking for a Phlebotomist to join the Endocrinology Team in Lexington.


Navigates the electronic medical records system to determine and enter physician orders, enter laboratory results and complete a patient appointment. Draws blood by skin puncture or venipuncture depending upon the test requested by the physician. Labels tubes properly and delivers tubes according to laboratory policy. Performs point of care testing as outlined in the procedure. Obtains patient medication history as needed. Answers telephones and responds to inquiries by patients, other personnel, visitors or others. Participates in training procedures as directed by supervisor.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency in the current principles and practices of phlebotomy.
  • Knows and understands all collection tube types and their use.
  • Maintains supplies by ensuring blood collection sites have adequate collection tubes within expiration dates.
  • Reviews patient's chart in Allscripts (Electronic Medical Record) to determine physician laboratory orders.
  • Orders laboratory tests in Laboratory Information System following computer procedures.
  • Verifies patient and patient samples by requiring two means of identification.
  • Asks patient appropriate questions concerning current medication usage.
  • Collects blood in the appropriate tube for each test by performing finger sticks and/or venipunctures, according to established protocols.
  • Performs all point of care testing (PT, Blood Glucose, Creatinine, Hemoglobin A1C) as outlined in the procedure.
  • Enters and verifies all manually entered test results in Computer system.
  • Queues patient after blood has been collected to the patient's next appointment.
  • Observes Blood Bank ID systems collection protocol.
  • Follows Lab protocols concerning alert (critical) values.
  • Increases patient satisfaction by reducing anxiety, responding to requests and questions in a professional manner.
  • Assists other members of the departments to assure quality patient care.
  • Protects patients and employees by complying with infection control and hazardous waste procedures.
  • Maintains and adheres to all safety policies and procedures of the Laboratory.
  • Completes BLS, HIPAA, and FDA training successfully.
  • Maintains working relationship between Laboratory, Physicians, and other departments of BH.
  • Protect patient's privacy by following BH policies on HIPAA.
  • Conserves resources by using supplies and equipment only as needed.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • BLS Required.
