Wieland is hiring a Smelting Furnace Process Engineering INTERN. The engineering intern will be responsible for discovering, developing, and distributeing/explaining "best practices" for fire-refining of copper scraps in RC business unit SE site. They will become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for fire refining (advanced anode furnace operations) of copper scraps. This role is located in Shelbyville, KY and will be fully on-site.

Starting Pay: $20-25 per hour

Responsibilities

Engineering Intern Responsibilities:

    Find ways to economically process *all* copper scrap streams provided to the SE plant by Global Metal Buying
  • Provide hands-on process accountability for the fire-refining of copper scraps into cathode replacement copper bars of purity >99.97%Cu (minimum) and >99.99%Cu (target).
  • Coordinate and align with other Shelbyville Engineering, Logistics, and Lab teams to assure hands-on optimization ($OPEX, $CAPEX) and operation (TPH, $/ton) of the advanced anode furnace / fire refining process for copper scraps.

Engineering Intern Qualifications:

  • Preferred Junior-year progress towards bachelor's degree in metallurgical, materials, or chemical engineering.
  • Must be a Team Player and able to communicate effectively across all layers of the organization (corporate, metal purchasing, environmental, sustainability, plant management, laboratory, engineering, shop floor, yard, dock)
  • Strong interpersonal, cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural communication and leadership skills are required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and practical "can-do" attitude are expected.
  • Must want to work in "hands-on" situations and apply "book knowledge" and "logic" towards real-world solutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in office, remote, and heavy manufacturing settings.
